Player Perfomances:
Courtesy of a good win against Crystal Palace, we moved up to third in the Premier League table.
The scoring began after 11 minutes when Gabriel Corner converted his kick, the crowd waited patiently and then they were in the thick of it for the second time when his header went past Eagles goalkeeper Dean Henderson for an own goal.
After the first break Leandro Trassard marked his first anniversary at the club by finishing off a breathtaking counter-attack to put the result beyond doubt before the hour-mark, before Gabriel Martinelli scored two goals in stoppage time.
We have lost in our previous three matches but in this match
After a winning streak, the desire for three points was good going into this match and we were always in control of proceedings as we enjoyed more possession, territory and crucially chances.
And we make them remember in this game. We went into it with more headers than any other team in the division and when we took the lead after 10 minutes our spirits were high as aerial prowess came to the fore once again with no pressure on us.
Declan Rice turned on a dangerous delivery, and Gabriel slipped around Chris Richards to get a run towards the ball, and he fell over the American midfielder to beat Henderson to score his second of the campaign.
We accidentally added a second three minutes later when another flag kick – this time from Bucayo Saka – caused trouble and Jefferson Lerma saw the ball off his head and over his own crossbar as Palace breathed a sigh of relief.
As we dictated most of the first half, chances were few and far between and allowed the visitors to grow in confidence, and in a brief period of dominance for Roy Hodgson’s side, David Raya volleyed well to push his goal home. Long-range for Lerma safety.
But our lead was strengthened on 37 minutes, and that man Gabriel again did damage from a corner. This time, Saka received an assist when his delivery found a defender at the back post, and the Brazilian managed to turn the ball towards goal which found the back of Henderson’s head into the net, the shot-stopper credited with an own goal.
Trossard then scored a third just before half-time, linking up well with Gabriel Jesus but seeing a fierce shot fail to hit the target, but he was not to be denied 13 minutes after the restart.
A swift counter-attack began when Ray latched on to a Will Hughes cross and laid the ball out to Jesus in acres of space. He stepped forward and picked the perfect time to square for Belgium, who showed great composure to sit Nathaniel Clyne before blasting past a helpless Henderson to seal our fourth successive win against the Eagles with 30 minutes to play.
With the result in doubt, the rest of the game was played in third gear and chances dried up. Roy again did well to push away a powerful Eberechi Eze free-kick from outside the box, and Saka fired over a well-placed shot.
However when we put more emphasis on the scoreline there was a final flourish in injury time. First, Saka held Eze in check and we got another fast break which found Eddie Nketiah coolly slotting Martinelli past Henderson.
Then 102 seconds later, the winger was sent through on goal again courtesy of a delicious pass from Jorginho and found the same corner of the net to put the icing on a deserved and much-needed victory.
